Bio
In 2020, the world relied on the internet to connect with one another to create community due to Covid-19. The ever-resourceful drag community developed digital drag shows on multiple platforms as entertainment for everyone cooped up at home.
Kings of the World was the first monthly, global, cyber, drag king variety show which was streamed through Twitch, an American video live-streaming service. The shows were co-produced by Los Angeles based drag kings Johnny Gentleman, Pelvis Breastly, and Mo B. Dick who also hosted the shows. This connected drag king, trans and non-binary performers from six of the seven continents in unique ways.
The impetus for the Kings of the World show came from Johnny Gentleman who saw the need for drag king presence on the burgeoning virtual stage. He teamed up with The Cake Boys, a New York City drag king collective, to co-create Kings of the World. The Cake Boys reached out to Mo B. Dick who agreed to host the shows. Eventually, The Cake Boys dropped out due to emotional duress as Covid-19 hit New York City hard. Mo B. Dick then stepped up and used his contacts and connections to cast the first show within a two week deadline!
Performers were required to film and edit their own videos to be in the shows. The videos were then broadcast live after being formatted to Twitch’s specifications. This meant that performers were quickly learning how to create a set, light the set, film their lip-sync performance then edit it to match the song they performed to. A new genre and medium was conceived that was perfected through the use of smartphones and ensuing apps. The Kings of the World shows included both solo and group performances.
In an effort to showcase as many drag kings as possible in one show, Mo B. Dick came up with the idea to have numerous drag kings in one video from the same city or country. For example, Mo reached out to Phil T. Gorgeous of Dublin, Ireland to pick one song that each drag king in Ireland would perform to and film in the privacy of their own domain. Then edit all of the performances to create one cohesive video using the same song. This valiant collaboration in Ireland culminated into the Irish Drag King Collective (IDKC). In an unforeseen way, the quarantine brought isolated individuals together, and the results were pure magic.
Though lasting for only four months, Kings of the World made an impressive impact on the drag king, trans, non-binary community as it created camaraderie and kinship during a divisive time in our world. The live chat room during each show proved to be a place to meet, greet, make friends, share praise and create a warm gathering of like minded folks.
The Kings of the World show was proof that the LGBTQIA+ community is strong, resilient and terrifically entertaining especially when the world needed it the most. A library of the 62 video performances was created to view, and we hope you enjoy all of these wonderful performances!
